Ancient English Gladiators
A gladiator (Latin: gladiator, "swordsman", from gladius, "sword") was an armed combatant who entertained audiences.
The earliest English known gladiator was James Figg (1695 – 1734).
He was universally recognized as the first English bare-knuckle boxing champion, reigning from 1719 to 1730.
Figg was also a great swordsman and would also fight with the cudgel and the quarterstaff.
